So, first San Juan de Los Lagos:

Mom remembered going here when she was very young, especially to visit the cathedral basilica.
Here it is decorated for the Christmas Season. Mom did not remember the victory column and fountain in the foreground, however. The sign says "Do Not Feed the Pigeons" and Keep your Hands out of the Fountain" basically. Here is another shot of the column, and another. The pigeons love the column, it seems.. Also new, I think this is a statue on Pope John Paul II. Mom was melancholy about photos of the inside of the church. She pointed out all the gold decoration, and reminisced about the pilgrimage to Mexico City she went on with a group from the local catholic churches here. There was a lot of gold inside the churches they visited in and around Mexico City but a lot of poverty outside. She claimed that most of what is at San Juan de Los Lagos was gold leaf, though.

The Mexican relationship with the Catholic Church is awkward. Part of it is due to the Church's role during the Spanish Colonial Period, then the mythology surrounding the War for Independence, land grabs by the Church, and then the Revolution and Cristero War. On one hand Mexico is in love with the Virgin of Guadalupe and being Catholic is such a big part of being Mexican, but there is this strong current of suspicion of the Church and almost-athiesm. Not saying that everyone is that way, but its in Mexico's national character. Nevermind what other Christian denominations have to say about the devotion to Mary. The altar at San Juan de Los Lagos is a bit of an extreme example; the center piece is a statue of Mary and the angels at the top seem to be bringing down a crown on her, while Jesus is on a crucifex off to the side. 'Course, there are more extreme examples in Mexico City and Tepeyac, specifically.

Anyhow on to Pátzcuaro.

In the parts of Mexico that Mom grew up in, the big thing to do on El Día de Muertos is to celebrate on the island of Janitzio on the Lake of Pátzcuaro. On that day, there are dances and performances in the big plaza at the top of the hill, though she doesn't remember the huge statue at the center. She probably never bothered to look upwards. Of course, since it was El Día de Muertos, visiting the island's cemetery is a thing. This is the picture that helped mom confirm I was looking at the right island; she remembered walking though the gate with the bell. She also remembered that there was food and bottles of booze decorating the graves, all mostly from the favorite meals of the deceased person. But she also remembers it was raining hard that day, so getting down to the cemetery was difficult. The roads are all cobblestone, but she says walking around was like wading in a river; she remembers that she was afraid she would get swept out int the lake. It kind of explains why she never looked up and noticed the statue of José Morelos. Anyway the only way to get on and of the island were chalupas, seen here used by a local fisher, but now it safer looking boats are used.

Thanks random internet people for geotagging your photos!

Some thing a friend's brother made!

According to his facebook comments it isn't totally faithful to the book. There is an underground garage with a 30' roof served by a freight elevator. Why? Who knows!

Recurring dream: I am driving a car, alone with no passengers. I am never in the driver's seat. It is surprisingly doable, but difficult. I should be panicking but I am only worried by the situation. Despite this I never take the time to hop in the driver's seat.

So back in my last post I promised to post up a link to the 5 Languages of Love quiz. Unfortunately, the link I originally used is dead, as is usual with these quiz things, but the originator of the concept (Oprah approved >_> doctor Gary Chapman) has the quiz on his website.

so anyhow:
Acts of Service: 12
Quality Time: 7
Words of Affirmation: 6
Receiving Gifts: 3
Physical Touch: 2

Hmm.. I think this may be suffering from a bit of confirmation bias.

Mind you, love is just a hook. This is more about communication of feelings than anything else. Knowing how someone communicates best will help you communicate to that person how much you hate them, too. In addition, knowing their least favorite mode of communication is a good tool to have when your goal is annoyance. AND GAH, easiest way to annoy me is to be a physical communicator or to shower me with gifts/swag/crap I have to keep around forever to spare your feelings and not seem appreciative.

Genuine memesheepage ahoy! )

Ok, according to the scoring sheet I scored a 28 on visual, a 28 on auditory and a 15 on kinesthetic.
I feel experiential learning should be included, and not lumped into kinesthetic. Stupid quiz designer. RRRR.

If you want to know how scores are calculated, leave a comment.

Meme?

K, bored and uninsipred so here's a meme

OK, not really, but I need to gather some anonymous data. There was a time when I was studying to be a teacher and this survey would have made more sense, but that's behind me. I am just going to make an infographic out some other silly thing out of it.

I could fake the numbers, I suppose. It's not like I am going to try to get a teacher's certificate or a master's in Education with it. Bah.

Makes you wonder about the survey memes that float around DW, doesn't it? Eh, most of them are just creative and prose writing exercises, I am sure.

Fake memesheepage ahoy! )

I'll answer these myself soon, since I sense part of the motivation to do these things is so that your readers get a glance at who you are behind the veil of your usual writing style and so that you get to know your readers as well, in a sort of quid pro quo sort of fashion. But I spent too long typing and formatting this and bed calls.

So, the theme for next month's Runescape Player Gallery is Gods & NPCs as You've Never Seen Them, or, what do the NPCs do when they don't have their public face on? Almost immediately after reading the prompt I thought of depicting Amascut in Milliways, specifically her impromptu eating contest with Yrael and her beer chugging contest with Red/HellBoy. 'Cause what can be more casual than the Devourer in an eating contest?

Then while walking about doing errand I though to myself, "Wouldn't it be great if I did a Runescape version of APPLE.MOV featuring Amascut and the Mahjarrat, set in the early Second Age? I could call it SHARK.MOV (subtitled: or the real reason Amascut went insane) and WOULDN'T THAT BE AWESOME?!?!?!"

Curses! Why am I not an artist? Oh lack of talent! Why must I posses you?

Ok, the title is your monthly dose of hyperbole from me. Anyway... have a bunch of super heroine costume redesigns. Fully clothed women! So practical, and no needlessly exposed midriffs or cleavage or, gee... no bare legs either. Not even on Vampirella. Pants for everyone!

Included are Zatanna, Supergirl, Psylocke, Wonder Woman, Power Girl, Elektra, Vampirella, and Black Canary.

Wondy is a good example of practical boobplate. Uniboob = good, decorative cleavage = bad cracked sternum

Unfortunately the artist sounds reluctant to do anymore.

Zilyana/K'ril shippers are so odd. Kudos to Zilyana's mun for putting up with them. Haha.

Has there been some angel/demon action on Supernatural lately? I wonder where this is coming from.

So, according to Word of God (Mod Osbourne in this case, senior narrative designer) Amascut is classed as a demigod in the new tiering system the Runescape devs are playing around in now that canon is going to be focused on the gods.

What this means exactly, I dunno, but it is making a headvoice very cranky. It doesn't diminish her power or make her less dangerous, it just means she is outclassed by most gods.

It might even mean she was mortal once. A portion of the gods that outclass her are turning out to have been mortals once as well.

Quoth the Osborne: )

Amascut's info is due an update anyhow. Someday.

I just had Z-list celebrity Penny Drake retweet me. Um... squee.

'Course it was a tweet suggesting her for a role in a movie; a kind of hypothetical 'who should play character X in a live version version of video game y' kinda question. And being a Z-list celeb, you can bet she's gonna retweet anything suggesting that she would be great for so and so role. The girl needs work! Although, she seems to be doing fine; she's recently had to give up a job at marketing at SBE nightclubs to become a location scout, so she's back in the film industry? Maybe?

... Z-list is something of an in-joke between her and her fellow actor friends. After staring in Sin City (well, she got more butt-time than face-time in that, unfortunately) and The 40 Year Old Virgin, she starred in mostly a load of small time horror movies. The only one that might have gotten more attention outside of the niche horror circles was Zombie Strippers, since it had a big name attached to it. She played a zombie. So, Z-list.

k... that's enough creepy stalkery shit out of me! Time to end this post!

So I have heard that if any of a specific group of characters gets killed of in The World Wakes, they get replaced in the game outside of the quest. Runescape's devs have done this before with two of the slayer masters who died in a previous quest. It's sorta neat, different characters will appear in certain areas of the larger game to different players based on what quests the player has done. This has been going on for a while, infact, Amascut is someone for whom the devs have to do this a lot. But those were scripted deaths/disappearances; these are deaths that might or might not happen and characters and character dialogs that may or may not need replacing. There must be quite a large amount of data attached to every player character.

Anyway, one of the characters who may die is a giant earwig named Fiara. She gets replaced by a human monk called Coulson. I was wondering why the hell the name Coulson was coming up in spoiler threads so much. Hee.

It has become a bit more apparent that it isn't a coincidence that Gielinor, the name of the world Runescape is set in, is an anagram for the word religion.

What brings this up? New canon, in the form of Runescape's new quest, The World Wakes.

The developers are about to do a curious thing which I could of sworn they wouldn't do, given that Runescape is an MMO, and a particularly massive one at that. Starting next week, all content that they add to the game is going to treat The World Wakes as if it happened in the past. Mini-games, mini-quests, full blown quests, holiday events, everything. All the old content will remain, save for the hokey old fetch quests and copy and paste stories that the devs now seem so urgently to want to change and align with the lore. Romeo and Juliet was a victim of this a while back, as it wasn't really a Runescape story, it was a Shakespeare story. The devs have already stated that they aren't going to touch the Arthurian Legend inspired stuff as it is too ingrained in the lore, but I am sure it is a sore spot. We'll see. But anyhow, the old content is staying, but, in regards to the lore, it is all stuff that happened before The World Wakes. Even if it wasn't in the list of requirements for the quest, they are all just memories.

Of course, with The World Wakes being in the past in regards to all new content from this point on, spoilers for The World Wakes are almost unavoidable. Except maybe not. The devs have promised that new content will still be playable to players who haven't played through The World Wakes just like old content will still be playable for players who have, but the new content will have a toggle so that players can avoid the spoilers.

I wonder how long the devs will keep that up.

Not that it matters to me. I don't avoid spoilers; I live on them. I wouldn't be able to play [personal profile] death_gone_mad, [personal profile] fowl_beast, or [personal profile] fairy_fixit otherwise. I have only seen Amascut in game once, and all I did was flip though all her dialog options and freak her out with a purple cat. Well, wait, no, I also dealt with her in game in her Lady Keli guise. (That was another quest that got rewritten to align it more with lore. Well, no, it was fine lore wise but kind of boring, almost a fetch quest).

This is interesting... I wouldn't have thought a linear story could fit into an MMO. The calendar year has been stuck at 169 Fifth Age since the game first came online way back in 2000 AD. With this, a new year has arrived. Have other MMO's done this? I wouldn't know, Runescape is the only MMO I have played around in.

A former teacher friend who I have friended over facebook is making my think she's been replaced by a Homestuck troll. She has consistent typing quirks and everything.

It scares me that I am so easily friendly with such folks.

Hello snowclouds. *poke*

Ya gonna show me some love this time around?

No?

Ok, I understand, you are in a rush to get to Alabama or somewhere.

Stingy clouds.

HERE COMES ANOTHER COLD FRONT!

Oddly enough, the local NPR affiliate said that 25 inches of snow is expected to fall on Los Alamos. NOTHING BUT WIND everywhere else though.

What the hell Los Alamos, you are supposed to be working on weather modeling, not weather control. Bad scientists!

Huh. I think I saw a toy hot air balloon being blown about in the skies above the train station. I wonder who released it.

Basically it is some sort of candle or some other flaming thing suspended below an envelope. And just like a real hot air balloon, the flaming thing heats up the air that is trapped in the envelope and the hot air keeps the whole thing afloat in the (surrounding colder) air.

At least I hope it was a toy balloon. Its a bit hard to judge both distance and size when something is flying that quickly though the air being tossed around by the wind. But if it was a toy, eep, what a fire hazard! It has been an absurdly dry winter.

no rest

Oof, what wind! I am sorry east coast, there is another storm coming your way after Nemo. It isn't dumping anything on New Mexico but, well that means nothing, really.

Such a dry winter; all the storms just blow by us and dump in the east. If any moisture does fall here it dumps even more to the east. I am so going to die in a fire this summer.

I wonder what's filming at the old Albuquerque train depot this time. Last week the tents were on that empty lot on 1st and Central.
