So last night, I figured out that that odd spit of land south of Sophanem and Menaphos looks a lot like the toe of the Louisiana boot and the way the Elid is depicted to flow into the south Eastern Sea is very much like the way the Mississippi flows into the Gulf of Mexico. Also, the relationship between Ullek and Sophanem/Menaphos should be, spacewise, like the relationship between Alexandria and Cairo. The Egyptian ones, anyhow.

The cave system running between Ullek and Sophanem tells me that the ground has a karst-like geology, and it make sense since one can mine limestone near Menaphos.

Huh, looks like the Nile Delta lies on top of a big wedge of carbonate rock as well. Really, Sopanem/Menaphos should be in the middle of a huge river delta that looks like Florida, like Cairo is, but the game depicts the land surrounding the city like a desert. A desert that crocodiles stalk, but, whatever. Oh hell, all those people have to get food from somewhere. Screw the game's map. The place is in the middle of a huge river delta. So says my headcanon.
