The way canon and game mechanics works in MMORPGs is problematic especially in regards to items that are supposed to be special and one of a kind. In runescape, there are many examples, like Zanik's crossbow and the Godsword. Zanik's crossbow comes from a quest that builds up the player character as one of the legendary heroes (I think you defeat the avatar of the resident war god in the quest, IIRC) but outside the quest, any player that has completed the quest has access to the crossbow. Most quests don't handle the fact that the game is a MMORPG well in terms of the canon created by the quest. I think one of the only exceptions is Icthlarin's Little Helper, where Amascut keeps duping adventurer after adventurer to do her bidding in her never ending cat and dog game against her brother. Well, there is also Shield of Arrav, which is a co-op quest and necessarily recognizes that there are other players. But even these examples treat other players as background noise in the story of the player character, as many other quests will.
What brings this on is Amascut's current thread with Weyland the Smith. And the Gambanteinn. It is, in essence, what the Godsword should have been. It was forged to slay Zamorak and end the God Wars, but the alliance of gods that worked to forge the sword shattered after a surprise attack by Zamorak, and the Godsword itself shattered. There is canonically only one Godsword, but curiously, four interchangeable hilts for the blade. The hilts will change the shape and the power of the blade, however, the Godsword is hardly the god slaying instrument it is supposed to be with any of hilts available. Of course, something like the Gambateinn would break the game, infact, the Godswords were a bit gamebreaky as they gave a huge advantage to melee combat centered player characters until recently. The fact is, there are a multitude of these swords floating around in the game when there is only supposed to be one in canon and I might have to deal with that dissonance rp-wise soon.
